What is a Bunion?

In medical terminology Bunions are referred to as Hallux valgus, it happens when the bones in your feet, particularly of the big toe starts to bend towards an odd angle, more leaning towards the second toe. While talking in medical jargon, the metatarsal starts to bend towards the inner angle after being displaced medially. Whereas, the proximal phalanx starts leaning in towards the second toe. This displacement of your big toe usually results in a very bumpy and bony appearance of your toes. You might be surprised to know that bunions are more common and widespread.

Although most people would tell you that the only way to fix this issue is by surgery but that is not always true. There many instances where the bunions are very slight and can be fixed without surgery too. You just need to get it assessed by a doctor first.

Causes

Although there is not enough conclusive evidence, but some studies have said that Bunions can happen because of shoes as well. If you wear shoes that are too either too small or tight for a very long period of time, it could lead to displacement. However, some of the known causes of Bunions include foot injuries, usually after a foot injury and during the healing period the big toe does tend to get displaced which is when the bunions start to form.
